‘It all happened so quickly. One minute I was squatting on the bare earth, preoccupied with popping pea pods. The next, I saw the flash of a black hand and white cloth, and before I even had a chance to cry out it had sailed towards my face, and completely covered it . . .’In 1954, in a remote South American village, a four-year-old girl was abducted and then abandoned deep in the Colombian rainforest. So begins the incredible true story of Marina Chapman, who went on to spend several years alone in the jungle, her only family a troop of capuchin monkeys. Using instinct to guide her, she copied everything they did and soon learned to fend for herself. At around ten years old, a completely feral Marina was returned to civilisation by hunters, who sold her to a brothel. After being enslaved and beaten daily, she escaped – to live the perilous existence of a Colombian city street kid. Marina’s life as a wild child wasn’t over. In some ways, it had only just begun. This is her astonishing story.

This book tells the engaging story of a Colombian Mowgli, except raised by monkeys instead of wolves. I tried hard to suspend disbelief, but quite a few details just don't add up. I'm willing to grant that it's been 60 years, and the story has gone through at least 3 hands before seeing the light of day in print form, but even so, just too many oddities.Quite a few scenes read like something out of a spy/drug cartel movie. There's even an exploding bomb, this in a time when bombs weren't as common,or even actually used at all, as they would be in later years. If this was creative liberty by someone to spice up the book, the only effect was to kill off any credibility when taken in toto.Even the feral raised by monkeys portion simply lacks believability if only because wild animals don't behave the way they're portrayed, at least not that variety of monkey. So I don't know what to make of it. These doubts detract from the story. Anachronisms abound. My parents are Colombian, and I've spent years in the country, though I was born in the USA and reside here still. Some of the descriptions of behaviors, hospital equipment, types of crime, they just weren't the way they're presented at the time the events allegedly took place.Faulty memory? Embellishment? Your guess is as good as mine. Worth a read? Yeah. But not Pulitzer material by a long stretch.
