With the same emotional generosity and effortlessly compelling storytelling that made All Over But the Shoutin’ a national bestseller, Rick Bragg continues his personal history of the Deep South. This time he’s writing about his grandfather Charlie Bundrum, a man who died before Bragg was born but left an indelible imprint on the people who loved him. Drawing on their memories, Bragg reconstructs the life of an unlettered roofer who kept food on his family’s table through the worst of the Great Depression; a moonshiner who drank exactly one pint for every gallon he sold; an unregenerate brawler, who could sit for hours with a baby in the crook of his arm. In telling Charlie’s story, Bragg conjures up the backwoods hamlets of Georgia and Alabama in the years when the roads were still dirt and real men never cussed in front of ladies. A masterly family chronicle and a human portrait so vivid you can smell the cornbread and whiskey, Ava’s Man is unforgettable.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook Ava's Man has garnered 8 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

Ava's Man is the story of the South itself. Not the antebellum South, not the South of film, but the South of blue-collar dirt poor working-class folk. They came up with the cotton, lived on and by the rivers, in rented houses, worked other folks land, and lived hard, loved hard, and passed from the earth before their time. Rick Bragg by his own admission knitted his grandfather together from whole cloth. This is not the story of the man he knew, but the man he came to know through stories gleaned from family reunions, long conversations, and lengthy discussions with family who painted a vivid portrait of the man he never got to know, but lived vividly and shown brightly in the halls of their memory.Charlie was a man bigger than life, the kind of man who told stories, made moonshine that wouldn't make you go blind or shoot your wife, and provided always for his family no matter what. He was not above violence in the name of saving his son, even from himself. Read this story, and you too will come to love "Mr. Cholly" as the family's adopted hermit called him.The Bundrums are what some of the less generous souls would refer to as "poor white trash," but this is an unfair monicher. They are, quite simply, the people you do not see, the people who work the fields, the factories, wear worn-out overalls, and with sports coats on Sundays, and turn the gears that keep the nation and the South at large progressing forward.I loved this book because these people look and sound like my family. The hard working salt of the earth blue collar folk who are often marginalized and derided by the culture at large. This is a book like no other. This is a memoir not only of Rick Bragg's family, but of the South itself.
